A Dentist can help you for a Healthier life Style

How a Dentist can help you.... for a healthier life style...?

People all dream to live a healthier life style, but only a few take some effort to do it. They know that prevention is better than cure, but always, because of procrastination they end up at the other end. Some small things that when done routinely adds up to a healthier life style.
Dr. Desmond John Gomez, Esthetic Dentist and Implant Surgeon at KIMS Bahrain Medical Center, highlights the importance of a routine dental consultation for a healthier life style. According to him, “Regular exercises, good eating habits, avoiding junk foods, quit smoking; brushing all are ways to achieve a dream life style. Almost all the time when you visit a Doctor you are advised some steps for a healthier life style, which are conveniently neglected. The usual answer is - No time. Healthier life styles are for people who stop procrastination, for the bold, people who like to take control of their own lives. Sadly for other spending a lot of time and money in the hospital is the only way out..! ”.
Research has pointed out that some diseases can be diagnosed by an oral examination quite early. Swollen bleeding gums, recurrent dental infections not only causes’ loss of taste, bad smell, loss of appetite, but serious medical complications related to the heart and respiratory system as well. It has been found that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease.
According to Dr. Desmond, a diabetic patient can reduce his medical bills by 10 to 12 percent by maintaining a healthy oral hygiene. Treatment of serious gum (periodontal) disease may be the key to an uncontrolled blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetes. Periodontal disease may increase the risk for respiratory infections, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia. These infections, are caused when bacteria from the upper throat are inhaled into the lower respiratory tract.
In short, eat healthier food, exercise regularly, brush twice daily (ask your Dentist to teach you the correct way to brush), floss at least once a day (ask your Dentist to teach you the correct way to floss); do not use tooth picks, balms and other ointments, paste or liquids which are for external use inside the mouth (your oral tissues are very sensitive). Visit your Dentist once in six months. Get your dental problems fixed as soon as possible. Don’t procrastinate. Save more, become a winner! Remember always in any condition an early diagnosis is critical.

TIPS FOR A BETTER SMILE

Although getting teeth whitened by a professional may be popular, it can also be expensive. The good news is there are many affordable and convenient alternatives that will help you achieve a bright, white smile.
·         Start with a checkup
A professional cleaning and mouth exam is your first step to whiter teeth. Make sure you get any cavities treated, and talk to your dentist about which whitening methods you should use.
·         Watch what you eat
Darker foods and beverages can stain your teeth. Limit your exposure to coffee, tea, red wine, colas and dark foods like beets and berries. When drinking beverages that stain, use a straw to help minimize discoloration. Lastly, brush or rinse as soon as you can after eating or drinking stain-causing foods.
·         Practice good oral hygiene
Brush at least two times a day, and floss at least once a day.
·         Use a whitening toothpaste
These products contain polishing or chemical agents that help remove surface stains.

A routine Dental visit can change your Life..!!

A routine visit to your dentist might help you in the long run to save on medical bills and to live a healthier life style. Medical literature has proven that oral manifestations of a disease appears early before the systemic manifestation. In fact it appears so early that test for some conditions should be repeated.
The oral cavity is the entry point for the digestive system and hence it reflects the condition of our digestive system. Many conditions related to the digestive system like Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, GERD has oral manifestations that appear quite early. Chronic liver diseases, connective tissue disorders, blood related disorders, HIV, Diabetes, Vitamin B12 deficiencies all have oral manifestations. A trained clinician analyses the information he gathers by examining your mouth, and careful review of other symptoms comes to a diagnosis.
Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease. When you have a long standing dental infection or gum disease there are toxins (harmful chemicals) that are released into the blood stream, these toxins are found to trigger the liver to make C-reactive proteins which are a predictor for increased risk of heart disease.
A report by George Taylor, University of Michigan associate professor of dentistry suggests that treating gum disease in patients who have diabetes is linked to 10 to 12 percent lower medical costs per month. A study published by The Cochrane Library led by researchers at the University of Edinburgh and supported by colleagues at the Peninsula Dental School, the University of Ottawa and UCL Eastman Dental Institute, suggests that the treatment of serious gum (periodontal) disease in diabetics with Type 2 diabetes may lower their blood sugar levels.
According to research published in the Journal of Periodontology. Periodontal disease may increase the risk for respiratory infections, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia. These infections, are caused when bacteria from the upper throat are inhaled into the lower respiratory tract.
In short, be diligent to visit your Dentist once in six months. Get your dental needs fixed as soon as possible. If you have bleeding or swollen gums, recurrent dental infections, ulcerations, white patches in your mouth visit your dentist as soon as possible. Don’t procrastinate. Always in any condition an early diagnosis is critical.

Don’t just think about it,do it. Invest in your smile.

Dental Implants are the most modern, cost effective, stable, long lasting and the best way to replace missing tooth or teeth. Normally, it will serve its owner for life. It is made of a small titanium screw that serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth.
Due to its biocompatible nature it fuses with the bone and becomes a good anchor for the replacement tooth, without the root structure of a natural tooth present, the jawbone can shrink. This shrinkage will make your face look older than it is. With traditional dental bridges, teeth adjacent to missing teeth are normally ground down to be used as anchors for a dental bridge. With dental implants there is no need to modify healthy teeth.
With more than three decades of clinical experience and over a million patients treated, statistics confirm a success rate of nearly 95 percent. Anyone who is missing one or more teeth due to injury, disease or tooth decay may be a candidate for dental implants. The determining factor is the amount of available bone. If you’re healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you’re probably healthy enough to receive dental implants.
Compared to the conventional methods of implant placement in which the treatment takes at least 3 to 6 months to finish, we have state-of-the-art guided surgical techniques which allow you to have the dental implant placed in a single. The major advantage of the guided surgical technique is the minimal amount of manipulation of the soft tissue due to keyhole surgery. This significantly reduces the healing time and the discomfort normally associated with traditional dental implant surgical techniques. It is normal to have some bruising and swelling in the gum and soft tissues. But usually the discomfort, if any, is treated with an ordinary painkiller. You should expect to be able to work the next day.
Patients who have medical or other conditions that may interfere with the healing process of either their bones or soft tissues (e.g., connective tissue disorders, steroid therapy, bone infections, cigarette smoking) must carefully evaluate, with their dentists, the potential risks and benefits of using dental implants.

Floss Your Teeth For A Better Smile

Awareness and new developments in the field of dentistry has given hope for maintaining teeth for a life time. Now most of us have a great deal of control to keep our teeth into old age. Parents have taken up responsibility for their child’s dental health and hygiene; more parents have taken up visiting the dentist with their young for regular checkups and treatment.
Brushing your teeth every day helps to prevent the accumulation of plaque. Brushing removes plaque and food debris from the large surface of the teeth and gums, while flossing removes the plaque from between your teeth, which is also important because as age increases the chances of having a cavity between your teeth increases.
Many people are not used to flossing, and initially flossing would seem messy and would take a long time, eventually it pays for the time spends. It’s good to floss at least once a day preferably before you go to bed. There are lot of types available in the market, try each one to find which one suits you the best and stick to it.
The most common method is to wind the floss around your middle fingers. Then pull it tight and guide it with your index fingers. You also can wind it around your index fingers and guide it with your thumb and middle fingers. Some people just hold the ends of the floss; alternatively use a floss-guiding tool.
·         Hold the floss so that a short segment is ready to work with.
·         Guide the floss gently between two teeth. If the fit is tight, use a back-and-forth motion to work the floss through the narrow spot. Do not snap the floss; you could cut your gums.
·         Hold the floss around the front and back of one tooth, making it into a "C" shape. This will wrap the floss around the side edge of that tooth.
·         Gently move the floss toward the base of the tooth and into the space between the tooth and gum.
·         Move the floss up and down with light to firm pressure to skim off plaque from the tooth. Do not press so hard that you injure the gum.
·         Repeat for all sides of the tooth, including the outermost side of the last tooth. Advance the floss to a clean segment for each tooth edge.
